After garnering applause during its screenings at TriBeca Film Festival in New York Australian feature The Rocket, directed by Kim Mordaunt, has since been showered in awards including Best Narrative Feature, Audience Awards and Best Actor (for 10 year old Sitthiphon Disamoe).

Set for theatrical release later in the year, The Rocket follows a family who are forced to leave their homeland after it is earmarked by the government for construction site of a dam. Misfortune befalls the family and Ahlo (Disamoe) is blamed for most of it. However, redemption is offered in the form of the dangerous Rocket Festival for which Ahlo hopes to enter.

Filmed across stunning locations in Laos, The Rocket as cited by the Jury "is a spectacular achievement that is powerful and delightful in equal measures." The Jury, whose members included Whoopi Goldberg, Bryce Dallas-Howard, Paul Haggis, Kenny Lonergan, Mira Sorvino and Evan Rachel Wood, also praised it for being "artfully structured and gorgeously shot," as "it chronicles the struggles of a displaced family while steering well clear of either sentimentality or despair."

The film will also enjoy a screening at the Gold Coast Film Festival. Tony Todd, James Duval, Noah Hathaway and Andy Mackenzie will all be in attendance.

Supanova takes place in Melbourne (April 12-14) and Gold Coast (April 19-21). VM will support the Blu-ray and DVD release with an above the line campaign across print and online media with additional prize packs, cross-promotions and social networking to maximise exposure.

Opening in select cinemas across Australia God Bless America, writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait's incendiary violent movie about kindness has been greeted with positive notices from reviewers and critics. The film follows the exploits of cursed nice guy Frank (Joel Murray), a divorcee fed up with the mass culture miasma of modern America and together with a runaway girl (Tara Lynne Barr) commits to a killing spree as they drive a bright yellow Camaro across the country dispatching obnoxious reality TV stars, xenophobes, belligerent cinema goers and others.

Savage and often hilarious God Bless America is "a comic-cry of rage against 21st Century America" according to In Press magazine. Cinephilia describes it as "one of the most satisfying films you will see this year." David Stratton on At the Movies identifies it as a "way, way out there black comedy." Writing in Urban Cinefile Andrew Urban also praises the film as "a darkly comic tragedy and socially valuable scream that demands our attention."

God Bless America will be available on Blu-ray and DVD through Eagle Entertainment in February.

Opening in select cinemas across most states of Australia today James Marsh's Shadow Dancer, the acclaimed IRA thriller starring Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson, has been met with praise by critics. From the Academy Award winning filmmaker behind Man on Wire, Shadow Dancer is a taut adaptation of the book by Tom Bradby in which a young woman is forced to betray all that she believes in for the sake of protecting her young son.
Simon Miraudo writing for Quickflix notes, "post-credits food-for-thought is a rarity in most films these days, and that it should come in the wrapper of a totally engrossing thriller is some kind of wonderful." The Sunday Age agrees calling it a "[h]ighly charged intense drama handled with intelligence and grace." The Guardian calls it a "[b]rilliant thriller," highlighting the measured "pacing and fierce female performances."
Opening October 11 Shadow Dancer will screen in Victoria at Cinema Nova, Kino Cinemas, Palace Como, Palace Brighton Bay, Cameo Belgrave, Sorrento Cinemas, Star Cinema Eaglehawk. In New South Wales the movie will screen at Chauvel Cinema, Cremorne Orpheum, United Cinemas Collaroy, Cinemax Kingscliff, Narooma Cinema; in Queensland it will show at Palace Barracks, Cineplex Balmoral, Cineplex Victoria Point, Blue Room Cinebar; in South Australia at Palace Nove Eastend, The Trak; and it will screen at the State Theatre in Tasmania.

Billy Bob Thornton has returned to the director's chair for the family period saga Jayne Mansfield's Car. Featuring an all star cast that includes Thornton himself, Oscar winner Robert Duvall, Oscar nominees John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, as well as Robert Patrick, Ray Stevenson and Frances O'Connor, Jayne Mansfield's Car joins together two very different families - one American and one British - across the Atlantic in a small Alabama town in 1969 at the height of the Vietnam War.

Both heartfelt and funny, the movie interweaves culture clashes, generational divides and explores the relationships of sons and their fathers. Thornton co-wrote the screenplay with Tom Epperson (One False Move, The Gift).

The film has just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. "A triumphant return to directing" notes Craveonline. Thornton has directed three previous films: Slingblade, the Cormac McCarthy adaptation All the Pretty Horses and Daddy and Them.

Jayne Mansfield's Car will be released on Blu-ray and DVD through Eagle Entertainment January

Acclaimed TV presenter, former punk chef and culinary globetrotter Anthony Bourdain, host of the popular television show No Reservations has released his debut graphic novel Get Jiro. Inspired in part by the famous octogenarian sushi maestro Jiro Ono, subject of the award winning David Gelb documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, currently available to rent and buy through Curious Film, Get Jiro fulfils "a child's dream," according to Bourdain.

A long time collector and fan of comic books, who once inspired to create write and draw them long before he had ambitions in the kitchen, Bourdain has conceived a satirical and often ultra-violent dystopia in which a future Los Angeles is ruled by two chefs, think Yojimbo with Jiro as the Toshiro Mifune ronin.

"It's about different clans of warning chefs with different ideologies," Bourdain describes it, "who slaughter each other in the streets." It has already topped the New York Times Hardcover Graphic Books List in July.

Released over winter by DC Entertainment's Vertigo imprint, Get Jiro sees Bourdain collaborate with writer Joel Rose and artist Langon Foss and José Villarrubia.

Master Chef winner Adam Liaw notes, "You can almost hear every line of dialogue in the chef's familiar New York drawl, and each exposition of food philosophy is accented with his trademark sardonicism."

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is available to buy for $24.95.

Polisse, written, directed and starring Maiwenn, as an undercover journalist working with a Parisian police unit that specialises in cases of child abuse, continues to garner acclaim from critics. Released through Curious Film, who has also brought Winter's Bone and Red State to the attention of national audiences, Polisse is a gritty, uncompromising and sometimes bleak procedural. Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Polisse, according to Andrew Lee in Cinephilia "is excellent filmmaking that takes a difficult subject and infuses it with life and, occasionally, even hope." Leigh Paatsch in the Herald-Sun describes it as a "French crime drama with a real, damaging difference." "Polisse has a terrific cast. It is a tough, yet sympathetic group portrait," notes Philippa Hawker in The Age, "that never feels sentimental or idealising."

Eagle Entertainment in conjunction with Potential Films will release the upcoming movie events Shadow Dancer and God Bless America. Potential Films will handle the theatrical platform bringing both features to cinemas nationwide in Australia and New Zealand later in the year. Eagle will be responsible for DVD, Blu-ray and online platforms. Starring Clive Owen and directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire) Shadow Dancer is a heart-wrenching thriller recently announced as part of this year's programme at the Melbourne International Film Festival. "Measured intelligence," Variety observes, "and artfully apportioned suspense."
Bobcat Goldthwaite's incendiary take on a mismatched, generational divided modern day Bonnie and Clyde, God Bless America, featuring Joel Murray (Mad Men and brother of Bill) and Tara Lynne Barr, is a taboo-shattering satirical take on the dumbing down of society through a jaundice pop cultured lens. "As acidic and funny a movie as you're likely to see this or any other year," announced the Huffington Post.
Shadow Dancer will be released October 4. God Bless America is slated to open November 1.

Ti West's acclaimed independent thriller The Innkeepers which streets August 23 will be released across multiple platforms. It marks the first title from Accent Film Entertainment to be launched on Blu-ray. One of the most acclaimed genre films of 2012, The Innkeepers confirms the talents of independent West, who creates an intimate ghost story of mounting dread and atmospheric restraint. For slacker desk clerks Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy), it's business as usual at the historic Yankee Pedlar Inn. Aside from tending to the few remaining guests and prepping the place for imminent closure, the erstwhile employees have sexual tension to work through and paranormal activities to explore. It is said that a jilted young bride suicided on her wedding night nearly a century ago, the body buried in the basement to avoid scandal.
Lauded by critics as the year's most outstanding thriller, The Innkeepers has garnered both and acclaim and awards. Sam Adams writing in Philadelphia City Paper describes it as "a slow-burning creeper that pays off in spades." Simon Foster at SBS Film observes the "charms of leading lady Sara Paxton and the considerable genre chops of filmmaker Ti West make for a winning formula in the old-school haunted hotel fun ride."

Ti West will be participating in interviews with select Australian media. The DVD and Blu-ray will both retail for $29.95.

The film adapted from the acclaimed 1986 novel by Haruki Murakami has just been released and is available to both buy and rent. Tran Anh Hung's mesmerising period piece, which observes a complex triangular bond between students during the tumultuous '60s, has been called a "major film" by the Sydney Morning Herald and described as "sublime" by Margaret Pomeranz on At the Movies.

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman K. Collins has played to a sell-out audience at the old Paramount building in Surry Hills. Upon arrival guests were greeted by roller girls and were treated to a hot dog kiosk by Yummy Dogs D.I.Y. Live tattoing and live music from rockabilly artist Pat Capocci also featured in addition to arm-wrestling and rum drinking thanks to sponsor Sailor Jerry. Currently screenings are also being held at the Lightbulb in North Bondi. A repeat performance is being scheduled for Melbourne in May.

Collins, a former merchant marine, who lived a hard and fast lifestyle eventually became an icon in Hawaii for his daring Eastern influenced tattoo designs and is regarded as one of the pioneering ink artists having inspired the likes of Ed Hardy.

"The night was a great opportunity to celebrate with Curious friends and family the release of a documentary that relishes in the exciting life and times of such a fascinating cultural icon," said Peter Grasse of Curious Film.
