Creepy anthology film Holidays challenges folklore

11/08/2016

Holidays, an anthology film of shorts from leading genre and horror filmmakers, is out on Blu-ray and DVD August 17. Rialto Entertainment will release the title ahead of Father's Day and Halloween. Speaking of which...

Taking its cues from the iconic holidays many of us now organise our social lives around the film plays in chronological order providing a nasty, sometimes chilling or bloody interpretation of characters challenged by circumstance on the aforementioned days of worship, leisure and celebration.

There are eight in total. Proceedings kick off with Valentine's Day (from the directors of Starry Eyes). The others included St Patrick's Day, Easter (from the writer-director of At the Devil's Door) which turns the Jesus resurrection, with some wry imagination on behalf of a child, into the basis for a zombie tale, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Halloween (from writer-director Kevin Smith). The penultimate episode is Christmas and features Seth Green cast as a man desperate to buy a pair of VR goggles as a gift for his child. Only there's a fault with the glasses and soon enough some troubling developments for him. The anthology concludes with New Year's Eve.

Fans of V/H/S, The ABCs of Death and the more recent Southbound should enjoy these bite sized and nightmarish tales of woe and the weird. The Hollywood News notes “Holidays is a delightfully dark, traumatically twisted jaunt through our favourite calendar dates.”

Scream Magazine raves “an absolutely superb ensemble cast keeps the whole thing bubbling along.”

“It's the perfect movie to settle in on the couch and watch with a friend,“ notes the reviewer at Screen Anarchy, “especially when you don't have to work the next day.”
