Acclaimed writer Stephen Belber directs Match in August

Match, out on DVD through Eagle Entertainment in August, follows the events of an interview when a Seattle couple travel to New York to talk to a well regarded former dancer for research on a thesis. But when common niceties erode the questions turn personal and the nature of the interview is called into question. Carla Gugino, Matthew Lillard and Patrick Stewart in a towering performance headline.

Based on the Tony Award nominated play by Stephen Belber who also directs, Match oscillates between sly wit, sensitive material all the while plumbing the depths of the artist's commitment to their craft. Belber a playwright turned filmmaker first came to prominence back in 2001 when Richard Linklater adapted his stage play into the movie Tape. Set entirely in the confines of a Midwest motel room, Tape was at once a funny and tragic look at a soured love triangle when the buried past surfaces to hold startling revelations for old high school friends, one of which has not moved on with his life. It starred Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Robert Sean Leonard.

Since then Belber brought to life the subtle screwball romance Management starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn. With Match, however, he returns to pulsating and assured intimate drama. The critics agree.

"Drama is driven by conflict," writes Mike D'Angelo in the AV Club, "but in this particular case it's the calm between the storms that captivates."

"Writer-director Stephen Belber's inspiriting, generous Match is so good that it's like some kind of trick," Chris Packham Village Voice.

Slant Magazine raves: "Patrick Stewart's performance is practically an argument for Belber to jettison everything else and take the actor on the road as a one-man spoken-word act."

Match is available August 26.
