Mike Myers' acclaimed doco on Shep Gordon arrives in May

Vendetta Films has announced it will release the lauded documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. Directed by Mike Myers (Austin Powers), the film which has wowed critics and audiences at film festivals across the world since its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last year is out on DVD May 20.

Showbiz legend. Self-made man. Supermensch. Shep Gordon is many things to many people. From the moment he moved straight from college in Long Island to Los Angeles where outside a motel in 1965 he got punched in the face by Janis Joplin and began his career in artist management thanks to one Jimi Hendrix, so began unlikely and very real professional associations with Jim Morrison, Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Blondie, Tedd Pendergrass and Alice Cooper. Indeed the chicken stunt originated with Gordon.

Stuffed with fantastic archive footage the film traces Shep's transformation from the 1970's hedonist to today's practicing Buddhist yearning for a family of his own. Gordon has managed many high profile chefs including Emeril Lagasse and has been credited with ushering in the era of the celebrity chef on television.

Myers who first met Gordon on the set of Wayne's World in 1991 struck up a friendship, awed by the relationships Gordon maintained with his former clients and other stars such as Groucho Marx, Whoopi Goldberg and Sylvester Stallone. The film also features interviews with Michael Douglas, Sally Field, Dana Carvey, Tom Arnold, Mick Fleetwood, William Hurt and others who recall experiences and hilarious anecdotes with the man known for both extravagance and kindness.

Winner of many awards including Documentary of the Year Hollywood Film Awards, Audience Award Sarasota Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize Miami Film Festival, Supermensch according to Kevin Jagernauth at the Playlist writes "is a strong first outing from Myers that plays like that one round of drinks that gets everyone telling stories at the end of a boozy night."
