Maniac hits the big screen

The new thriller from Monster Pictures, Maniac, a retro ice cool remake of the cult 1980 slasher movie, will be receiving select screenings in capital cities through Hoyts. Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings, Wilfred) stars as Frank, a withdrawn owner of a mannequin store who befriends a beautiful young artist after she asks for his help with an upcoming exhibition. A connection blooms as does, soon after, Frank's long repressed homicidal tendencies. Shot superbly from the skewed subjective POV of Frank and featuring a moody synthesiser score, Maniac showcases fine performances from Wood and Nora Arnezeder and receives a dual format release on Blu-ray and DVD October 16.

Keith Uhlich writing for Time Out New York notes "It still works its way under your skin and, by the time the highly disturbed Frank's casualties come back to haunt him en masse, cuts sanguinely to the heart." "Its audio-visual overload," writes Ed Gonzalez in Slant Magazine, "testifies to a group of filmmakers' belief that some films are made to be remade."

The film has also been nominated for some major awards including the Gold Hugo at the prestigious Chicago International Film Festival. Fans in Australia will be able to purchase a limited edition version containing a Maniac t-shirt exclusive to JB Hi-Fi.
